Subtracting signed numbers

  1. Find the changes in saving account balance If
    1) today's balance is $12, and yesterday's balance is $9.
    2) today's balance is $8, and yesterday's balance is $9.
    3) today's balance is $5, and yesterday's balance is $9 overdraft.
    4) today's balance is $5 overdraft, and yesterday's balance is $9.

  2. Find the increase in temperature if
    1) today's high temperature is 5ºC and yesterday's high temperature is 3ºC.
    2) today's high temperature is 3ºC and yesterday's high temperature is 6ºC.
    3) today's high temperature is 2ºC below zero and yesterday's high temperature is 3ºC.
    4) today's high temperature is 5ºC and yesterday's high temperature is 3ºC  below zero.

  3. Calculate

    a)  (+5) - (+3) b)  (+3) - (+4)
    c)  (-4) - (+2) d)  (-2) - (-3)
    e)  (-4) - (-4) f)   (-4) - (+4)
    g)  (+4) - (-4) h)  0 - (-4)

  4. Calculate

    a)  (+7) - (+4) - (-2) b)  (-2) - (-4) + (-3)
    c)  (+3) + (-2) - (-5) d)  (+1) - (-5) - (-4)
    e)  (-2) - (-3) - (-5) f)   (-4) + (-5) - (+3)
    g)  (-5) + (-6) - (-3) h)  (+5) + (+7) - (-5)

  5. Simplify by changing subtraction signs to addition sign, removing the addition signs and the positive sign of the the leading term, and then calculate

    a)  (+8) + (-3) - (+4) - (-5) b)  (-5) - (+3) - (-6) + (-1)
    c)  (+5) - (-3) - (-5) - (-2) d)  (-3) - (+3) + (-2) - (+6)
    e)  (-1) - (+3) + (+4) - (-2) f)   (-4) - (-3) + (-5) + (+2)
    g)  (+5) + (+7) - (-5) + (-4) h)  (-5) + (-6) - (-3) - (-4)
